Fexofenadine is an antihistamine used to minimize allergy symptoms. It may also be used to treat rashes and hives of unknown origin. Fexofenadine works by interfering with the production of histamine, which causes the runny nose, watery eyes, itching, sneezing and other symptoms associated with allergies.

The medication can be used in patients as young as 6 months, though dosage should be determined by a doctor for patients younger than 6 years. Patients can buy fexofenadine as tablets, oral suspension, or orally dissolving tablets (ODT); orally dissolving tablets are usually low-dose and reserved for use in children aged 6 to 11, while the oral suspension is used in patients ranging from 6 months to 11 years.

This product is most widely recognized by the brand name Allegra, though it also has a number of other brand names, including Telfast, Fastofen, Tilfur and others. Patients have the option to buy fexofenadine as a generic as well. Most localities do not require a prescription to buy fexofenadine.

Allergy Relief when you Need It

Unlike many allergy relief medications, fexofenadine is fast-acting and can be used as-needed. It helps to minimize or eliminate seasonal allergy symptoms, including:

• Sneezing
• Runny nose
• Congestion
• Watery eyes
• Itchy eyes, throat, or roof of mouth
• Mild rashes or hives
• Urticaria

Many patients also buy fexofenadine to manage allergy symptoms from pets, mold or other sources, indoors or out. Note that the medication does not help manage symptoms of asthma, however.

If taken in a sufficient dose, effects are noticeable within one hour of administration and last 12 to 24 hours depending on the strength used.

In patients 12 years old and up:

• Take 60 mg twice per day, around 12 hours apart; or
• Take 120 or 160 mg once per day.

In children aged 6 to 11 years:

• Take 30 mg twice per day, around 12 hours apart.

In children under 6 years:

• Speak with a doctor for dosage.

Some products can significantly interfere with absorption of fexofenadine, which considerably reduces its effectiveness. for 30 minutes prior to or after taking fexofenadine, avoid consuming:

• Fatty foods
• Fruit juices, especially grapefruit juice
• Antacids, vitamins or supplements containing aluminum or magnesium

Since the medication is used as-needed duration of treatment is entirely up to the patient, as long as it continues to provide benefits and no adverse effects are experienced. As with most medications, using the lowest possible dose for the shortest possible time is ideal.

Warnings & Side Effects

Fexofenadine is a very safe medication, unlikely to produce serious adverse effects even if taken in great quantity. Very young or elderly patients, and those with a history of heart, liver, or kidney issues, may be at greater risk of experiencing side effects.

Some patients do experience mild side effects, which are not cause for concern unless severe enough to be disruptive:

• Headache
• Nausea
• Diarrhea
• Vomiting
• Cough
• Mild sore throat

Though the medication is marketed as non-drowsy, a small percentage of patients do experience drowsiness. Use with caution the first few times until effects are known.

Fexofenadine is unlikely to harm unborn or nursing babies, however effects have never been studied. Pregnant or nursing mothers should discuss risks with a doctor.
